All your chess work stays on your Mac — your games, analyses, studies and statistics are never sent to us — and what does reach us is limited to what it takes to run a seven-day trial and a lifetime license: a fingerprint of your machine, a few technical details, and the dates that bound the trial.
What never leaves your Mac
- Your games, your PGN files, your analyses, your studies, your drills, your statistics. None of our server functions will even accept a game or a position: they only know how to read a machine identifier, a license key and three technical fields.
- The analysis engine (Stockfish) runs on your processor, not ours. Batch-analysing a thousand games produces no network traffic on our side at all.
- No account, no password, no profile: Régence never asks you to create anything with us.
What the app sends us
One row per piece of data that actually travels. There is nothing else.

Why we are allowed to
- Performance of the contract — the trial, the activation and the checking of your license. Without a machine identifier there is no trial and no license: it is the very mechanism of what you buy.
- Legitimate interest — the IP address, the country and the analysis counter exist to stop a seven-day trial from being replayed for ever on the same machine. The app and system versions, and the language, tell us what we still have to keep running and translating.
- Legal obligation — billing records, held by Lemon Squeezy as reseller.
- Legitimate interest — audience measurement on this website, with no cookie and no individual identifier.
What goes elsewhere, when you decide it does
- Lichess and chess.com import. At your request, the app queries
lichess.organdapi.chess.comto download your games. Traffic goes that way only: we receive nothing from that exchange. Your Lichess token, if you create one, is kept in the macOS keychain and is never sent to us. - Opening explorer and endgame tablebases. When you open those panels, the position on the board is sent to Lichess’s servers (
explorer.lichess.org,tablebase.lichess.ovh) to get the statistics or the theoretical result. It is a single position, without your game and without your identity. Close the panel and nothing leaves. - Updates. Régence asks
regence.appwhether a newer version exists. Sparkle’s system profiling is not enabled: no information about your machine is attached to that request, and the server only sees your IP address, as it would for any download.
On this website
- Audience measurement with Umami, which we host ourselves on the server that serves this site. No cookie, no individual identifier, no banner to click: page views, referrers, country, device type, as totals. Nothing is shared, nothing is sold, and you cannot be found in it. Kept until we clean up; you cannot be identified in it.
- Contact form. Your email address, your message, and if you fill them in your name, your Régence version and your system. The message is stored on our server, then notified to us by email (Amazon SES, Ireland region). Kept until you ask us to delete it, so we can find the thread if you write again.
- Purchase. It happens entirely at Lemon Squeezy, who is the official reseller: we never see your card or your billing address.
Who else is involved
- Supabase — the database and the functions that hold the trials and check the licenses. That is where the machine identifier, the IP, the country, the versions and the dates live.
- Lemon Squeezy, LLC — payment and license management, as official reseller (merchant of record). That is where your purchase email, your key and your Mac’s name live.
- OVH SAS — hosting for this website and our server, in France.
- Amazon Web Services (SES, Ireland) — delivery of the emails we send you.
- Umami — open-source software we run ourselves: it is not a third party, and nobody but us has access to it.
Lemon Squeezy and Supabase are American companies: the data entrusted to them may be processed outside the European Union, under the safeguards set out in their own contractual commitments.
Your rights
You can ask for access to your data, for it to be corrected or erased, for its processing to be restricted, for it to be ported, and you can object to whatever we process on the basis of our legitimate interest.
Write to contact@regence.app. So that we can find your rows, include your machine identifier: Régence shows its first eight characters in its settings, License tab. If you have bought a license, your purchase email address works just as well.
You may also lodge a complaint with the CNIL, the French data protection authority.
What we do not do
- No advertising, anywhere.
- No selling or sharing of your data. Nobody buys any, nobody receives any.
- No third-party cookie, no pixel, no cross-site tracker.
- No profiling: we build no portrait of you as a player, and no automated decision concerns you.
- No reading of your games. They never reach us, so the question does not even arise.
What changed
The previous version of this page was incomplete: it said that only a machine identifier and a license key were transmitted. That was false by omission. We are adding the IP address, the country, the Régence version, the macOS version, the system language, the trial analysis counter, and the Mac name sent to Lemon Squeezy at activation. Nothing new is being collected: the page is catching up with the software.
